Last October I ran a 2-day character design workshop with a group of 7-12 year olds at my local children's museum, Kidscommons.
I taught them how I made my characters, and then helped them create their own version. I then took their characters and reinterpreted them into a large mural on the upstairs wall of the museum. Very meta indeed.
The project was a blast. Working with the kids was amazing. I was so surprised how well they engaged with the work, and it was awesome to see their pride, knowing they inspired a finished piece of public art.
Very grateful to Amy Kleinhert, the director of the museum, for making this happen and to the Columbus Museum of Art and Design, the Columbus Area Arts Council, the Indiana Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
I hope I get to do something like this again soon!
